The Department of Commerce was started in the year 1952 with under graduate programme. It was upgraded to graduate level in 1955 and to Post Graduate level in 1962. During this period Commerce education was not available in any of the other colleges in the region.Young men and women craving for higher education in commerce veiwed this college as the centre for for fullfilling their aspirations.After more than half a century of functioning,the department adorns a prestigious place in the college.The department provides excellent coaching,opportunities for extra-curricular and other intellectual activities. So far this department has presented 47 batches of B-com students and 42 batches of MCom students to the university examinations and produced excellent academic results. The department has produced several university rank holders. For the academic year 2001, one of our final year BCom students Miss. Jesna Ismail secured third rank from Mahatma Gandhi University. In the year 2003 Miss Faisy Sebastian Scaria of final year BCom secured third rank. Many of our former students are holding very important positions in India and abroad. Some of them are working as teachers in the Commerce Department of various colleges under Kerala, Mahatma Gandhi and Calicut universities. Among the existing faculty of the department eight teachers are the old students of this department. Several college principal, chartered accountants, company secretaries, business men are these among our products. The Alumni Association is very active and functions very effectively. |
Our department stands best among top performing Arts and Science Colleges under the Mahatma Gandhi University in respect of university results for BCom and MCom. We regularly conduct remedial classes, student counselling providing financial assistance to the needy students. We hold cultural events associated with Onam, Christmas and New year. The faculty have attended various Refresher courses, national as well as Inter national seminar and various workshop's being conducted by various universities in and outside Kerala. Two members of our faculty are passing their PhD programmes. One of our faculty member secured PhD and another got MPhil degree during the yester years. One of our faculty members has been elected as a member, Block Panchayat in 2005 local body elections. In 1978 UGC has adjudged our department as the best department in the Kerala University.
