     DEPARTMENT OF ECONOMICS

Economics was initially offered as a subject, in this college, at the pre-university level. It was upgraded to the graduate level in 1968. The department acquired an additional batch in 1970. The commencement of the PG course in 1981 was a watershed in the history of the department. Housed in a separate block, it is one of the most populous departments in the college. 5 teachers have M Phil degree and one has a diploma in Tourism and Hotel Management.   One of the faculty members has a degree in law. Two programme officers of the National Service Scheme are from the department. Smt S.Nirmala is working on a UGC aided research project 'Good governance and Government in Kerala'.
A survey on' Socio-Economic Conditions of Under Privileged Women' was conducted by the department in 2004-05. The PG students actively participated in it. The PG students are encouraged to undertake projects regarding current economic aspects and they are submitted as dissertations to the university. The department keeps a record of these for reference purposes.
The department tries to create an environment of academic interaction through seminars. A one day state seminar on 'The Impact of Globalization and Liberalization on Kerala Economy' was held on 21-7-2004. A national seminar on the 'The Impact of Globalization and Liberalization on Labour' was organized on 30-1-2006. Members of the department regularly participate in seminars. There are about 500 students at the UG and PG level. Students from the weaker section form a majority; yet, the dropout ratio is very low. Continuous student assessment through various ways enables the department to look into the deficiencies of weak students. The well maintained tutorial system helps in identifying the academic and general needs of the students. The weaker students are provided remedial coaching.
The department is working hard to improve the results at all levels. Many of our students have come out with stellar performances in sports, arts and other fields like NCC and NSS.
