Highlights:

Pranjapatham - is a literary and cultural association of the department formed in 1980.It is engaged in developing the creative talents in students; in imparting knowledge in arts, science and literature; in organizing cultural and educational programmes; and in honoring personalities of various fields.

Samskriti- is a Sanskrit Literary association, under the stewardship of Dr.K.R.Prabhakaran and Sri K.R.Narayanan, started in 2002.

The department brings out 2 academic publications-:
Kurimanam- a quarterly magazine.
Pranja-   an annual journal.

Every year Kudumbasangamam, an annual alumni meet is held. A Gurupooja to commemorate the contribution of former teachers to the department and the literary world.

Extension activities
A Research centre is associated with the department.

An extention programme was presented for the students and research scholars in which Dr.Jayasree talked on Research Methodology. Malayalam Department along with its students commemorate the birthday of legendary Ulloor.S.Parameswara Iyer by visiting his birth place in Changanacherry. The Folklore arts like Padayani are given an important thrust, by visiting ritual festivals like Nilamperoor Padayani. The Gothrakalapeedom is in the forefront in popularizing this visual art.

  1. National Seminar on Performing Arts:
    Kathakali demonstration by Kalamandalam School on November, 19, 2005. 2.  
  2. Two Day National Seminar on Indian Aesthetics and Contemporary Literary Theories on 15/16th February, 2006.Dr.Jancy James, V.C. M G University, Dr. CJ Joy, Dr. Poojapura Krishnan Nair and   Dr. P.C. Muralimadhavan participated as resource persons.
  3. State seminar on comparative Literature on September, 1, 2005.
    Lecture by Prof P.Madhavan Pillai.  
  4. Seminar on Ramayana co-hosted by Malayalam and Sanskrit on December 19, 2005.

Talks by Sri P.K.Narayana Panicker, Dr.C.S.Rajan, Dr.Unnikrishnan kartha and Tony Mathew.

The teachers have published books and contributed articles to many journals.  

Dr C.R.Suseela Devi and DR.S.Ramachandran were selected Principals of NSS College Vazhoor and NSS College Mattanoor respectively

  

Sri B.Ravikumar was awarded PhD by Mahatma Gandhi University for his Doctoral Thesis "Kali Darika Myth in the Ritual Arts of Kerala". He is the chairman of 'Gothrakalapeedom',  Kunnamthanam, a training centre for ritual arts like, Padeni, Velakali & Kalamezhuthu.

  Dr.B.Ravikumar,Department of Malayalam, has been  alloted an amount of Rs 4.09 lakhs by the UGC for a major project related to Folklore studies with special emphasis on Padayani.
