Retrospect: The department of Malayalam came into existence along with the establishment of the college in 1947.At first Malayalam was offered as additional language. In 1959 BA Malayalam was started as optional subject. Consequently PG classes in Malayalam commenced in 1964. In 1988 the department got the status of a research centre from the M G University. 13 PhD's awarded from the Centre till date speaks volumes of the research efficiency of the department. The department has made a name for itself through the outstanding contributions of many eminent personalities who worked here.

Profile: At present there are 13 teaching members in the faculty. 2 of the teachers are associated with Sanskrit.   Six of them hold Ph.D. Degree; one has submitted the thesis and 3 are working for PhD. The department offers programmes at (i) Graduate, (ii) Post-Graduate and (iii) Doctoral level. Several research papers have been published by the teachers and scholars of the Department in various journals.   Some of our former students are occupying high positions in academic and administrative fields.Several research projects are undertaken by the teaching faculty. There are 5 minor projects with financial assistance from the UGC. The teaching staff members and research scholars regularly participate in national symposia/seminars. The UGC has sanctioned an amount of Rs 1,73,400 as PG   assistance. The department is utilizing the amount for the academic benefit of the teachers and students. The assistance has definitely galvanised the department into progressive and positive activities. Attempts are made by the department to study and propagate theatre arts, both classical and folk.There are about 100 students at the UG level and 36 students at the PG level. The department produces outstanding results at both levels.
